Photo Software - Which Do I Need For My Photo Editing Tasks? - Help!

Photo editing software or photo software allows you to create and modify bitmap graphics and photographic images. Photo programs can be used for tasks such as painting and drawing, colour correction, enhancement of photos, creating special effects, conversion of images from one type to another, adding text to graphics etc. Some of the most popular software tools available today include Irfan View, Photoshop elements, Photoshops' CS suites and Aperture for Apple Mac: as well as Gimp and Inkscape - open source alternatives.

IrfanView is a piece of photo software that lets you open and edit images. If offers an exhaustive list of advantages and features such as speed, a compact image viewer, being simple to use especially for beginners, support for many media formats including multimedia, multi-language support, thumbnail option, options for painting and very controllable slideshows. Moreover it is free for individual use and is very user-friendly in terms of the GUI it presents to the user.

The major disadvantage, is that it does not offer some of the very advanced imaging capabilities and also it is not available natively on the Mac. Among the photo programs, it is an excellent choice for people who need to work quickly, avoid a very steep learning curve and simply want to balance, crop and save an image for the next step in their work. It probably isn't a good choice for a professional photographer, except as a very quick form of software photo editing.

Photoshop Elements is an adaptation of Adobe Photoshop and is available for as low a price as USD $99. Nevertheless, it has a strong set of software tools. The user interface is simpler than Photoshop while retaining the core photo editing functions. Thus Photoshop Elements is like a scaled down version of PhotoShop. It focuses on digital photography and on an RGB workflow. Some of the more complex photo editing features such as Curves, Channel Mixer, and Color Balance have been disabled, making the GUI more manageable, with a friendlier learning curve. The major advantages of Photoshop Elements include: an easy GUI structure to navigate and that it is cheaper than Photoshop. The only disadvantage is that some of the higher-end features are removed.

Adobe Photoshop CS is a set of software programs for image editing that is considered to be the industry standard for graphics professionals. Although meant for professionals, it is also available for students at a fraction of the original cost. The main features of Photoshop as a photo editor, are the flexibilities it offers for media creation, editing and authoring. The file format is compatible with any of the individual programs that are available in the suite. As the de facto king of the photo programs, it has many tools for advanced photo editing, including a bewildering array of special effects services. The disadvantages of this suite of photo editing programs include: features you will never use; highly expensive and it takes massive processing power from the computer system.

Aperture is Apple Mac photo editing software. The Mac enthusiasts claim its advantages are; that it includes an all in one Inspector to consolidate the projects, adjustment panes, quick image search, accelerated performance, advanced photo editing capabilities such as superb color fidelity, etc. The disadvantage of Aperture is that it can be used only on Mac operating systems. Among the photographers that I know personally, this photo software is growing in stature amongst popular photo editing programs.

The Open Source movement is also muscling in on the act with Gimp (which is gaining recognition amongst photo editing programs) and Inkscape; (a vector drawing program) which is very good indeed for developing plans, maps and other graphics that need to be drawn. I haven't yet got to grips with Gimp as a photo editor, but I have used Inkscape regularly over the last year and it is a fully featured graphics software. I recommend that you give these new open source graphic softwares a good look before spending hundreds on Photoshop or Aperture photo software. In terms of value for money; like Irfan View, they are incomparable. Amonst the paid for photo editing programs, Photoshop Elements is going to be a more than adequate for anything that you need to do for the web unless you are going down the road of becoming career graphic designers. For these individuals and for professional photographers the photo programs of choice will almost certainly be Photoshop CS for PC based workers and Aperture if you are on the Mac platform.

Which is the Best Mosaic Photo Software?

All programs have their good points and their bad points and the same stands true for mosaic photo software. If you have taken the time to search the net for any program that can help you to design a mosaic photograph, you might have been boggled by the sheer number of programs available. Which is the best way to determine which one of them is the best? There are some professional image processing programs available that can do just any type of task and they can also be used to create a photo mosaic.

The disadvantage is that these programs are very costly and require a steel learning curve. After all, this program is capable of doing many other things, apart from creating mosaic photographs too and therefore they tend to cost a lot. If you are into photo editing and require specialized software that can undertake editing of your images and also create the occasional mosaic, this one is the best option for you. However, if you just want to dabble with images and make the occasional mosaic photograph, it makes sense to go in for some shareware or some freeware that is capable of undertaking just mosaic image creation if you are not going to use it for any other work.

This way you shall not have to pay too much money. It is strongly recommended that you do not go in for freeware... at least for mosaic photo creation, since it requires complex tasks which are not available in most freeware programs. Once you have located and downloaded the mosaic photo software of your choice, try it out for a few days. If you have downloaded a shareware version like suggested, you might find that certain functions do not work.

You need not be worried and need not think that the software is corrupted. The complete functionality of the program will be made available after you have paid the author its price and have received the activation code. Most programs restrict image color changing and printing functions in their shareware, also referred to as crippleware. Once the software is fully functional, you can use them to create marvelous mosaic images. You just cannot imagine the fun these programs are and how easy it is to work with them.

What takes one week for an artist to do manually can be accomplished in just 2-3 hours with the help of these programs! Their main advantage lies in the fact that they can resize images on the fly and also provide you with various other options like cropping the image, flipping it, creating inverse images of it, creating mirror images of the original and lots, lots more. If a particular image is perfect for a particular segment, but the color is not matching, you can use the eye dropper tool to select the color of the original picture and recolor the small piece accordingly. It is high time you started dabbling with mosaic photo software.

Photo Software Makes You Look Like A Professional

We are in an amazing age when people can relax more about taking pictures. No longer do you have to wait until you have the perfect lighting to be able to snap a good shot. Nowadays, you can use the photo software that comes with most new computers or digital cameras to make even so-so pictures look better with just a couple adjustments.

It might take a bit of experimenting with your new photo editing software to learn all of the tools and the different options available. But many of the newest versions have some basic automated functions that can very quickly improve your photos without the need of a degree in graphic design.

One of the most basic adjustments that can be made with good photo software, such as Adobe Photoshop, and also one that quickly makes a big difference, is the adjustment for lightening the picture. Every brand of photo editing software includes options that allow you to adjust the brightness and the contrast levels of a picture by simply moving a couple sliders in a special dialog box.

As you move the sliders you will be able to see the changes to the picture. When you get it just the way you like it, you can choose to make those changes, usually just by clicking on "OK." Just remember to also go to the file menu to save the pictures permanently.

If you are not sure about the changes that you are making with the software, then you can go up to the file menu and choose "Save As," which will let you create a copy that has your changes and will leave the original file untouched. You might want to re-name the photo so that you can easily recognize the file, or you can just add a letter or number at the end of the original file name.

If you are working with files that come from a digital camera, then you will find in most cases that the file names are just a series of letters and numbers that almost seem random. If you are going to be doing a lot of editing with your photo editing tool, then it is a good idea to develop some sort of standard naming system and convert the file names so you can easily identify your digital pictures. Using a combination of a good file naming scheme with a good system of file folders will be helpful and will help you keep your hard drives organized as well.

Many photo editing programs also have a function that helps you to organize and categorize your digital pictures. This is important if you will be taking digital pictures on a regular basis, as you can soon find that sorting through folder after folder of digital images to find that one photo can be frustrating. It is best when dealing with a lot of photos to use image management software to make your life easier.

Once you have had a chance to do some basic adjustments to some of your images with your photo software, you may decide you want to delve in and learn about some of the more advanced features. There are some great software downloads sites that have some plug-in software tools to add features to different photo editing software. And, while you are online searching for those, drop by some of the forums for tips and tricks from power users.

Which SEO Software?

With all the talk of Internet marketing and various strategies, there is one thing that is very important and that is SEO, or search engine optimization.

This is an important aspect of Internet marketing and ensures that your website is properly set-up for the search engines. If done correctly, SEO can help your website to rank well in the search engines and that means plenty of free traffic! The foundation of all SEO work and indeed most online marketing is keyword research. You need to find the keywords and phrases with the highest demand (searches) and lowest supply (competitors). Once you have found some, you can optimize your website to these keywords.

There are SEO professionals who charge hundreds and often thousands for their services. They know that if they do a good job, it could be worth thousands in additional business for their clients. So what about for the internet marketer and entrepreneur?

Well, SEO can be quite technical but fortunately, there is software that you can use that can streamline the process and save you many hours of work. SEO software can analyze what your competitors are doing on their websites that are helping them to rank highly in the search engines. Once you know this, you can copy them! Not only that but SEO software can analyze your website and let you know what changes you need to make in order to do well in the search engines.

The are quite a few package out there on the market and I have used a deal of them. Go to www.seofactory.co.uk and get a good overview of the best packages out there and see what meets your needs. The most expensive is not the best!

How to Obtain a 1st Page Ranking Using SEO Software

Now days, everyone and their mother own a website or some sort of internet based real-estate, but does everyone receive the amount of traffic that they'd wish to receive? That one is a tough question, but it can definitely be a lot easier on your part if you complete the following procedures. Let's face it, you can purchase all of the targeted traffic you want, and still not receive one sale if you own a website related to selling items.

It's just not going to work out for you, but if you rank high in Search Engines, then you definitely have a shot at becoming a rich man or woman for that matter. The thing is when people think of SEO, they think it takes a couple of weeks and then you're set, but it doesn't and anyone who tells you otherwise is just pulling your chain. SEO is a slow process, but if done right, can really show you the results you want it to show.

A few methods of SEO that people live by are link building, content creation, and using the right Meta tags that target your keywords in your content. In fact if you've ever heard about people who own a website, you will see them use the same words over and over again in their content. This is a strategy that does work and SEO software will determine if that is what your website needs. If you own a computer website and you are trying to target keywords; laptop computer and notebook computer, then you would obviously have to use those keywords in your content, but making sure you don't over exaggerate it too much.

The thing with some keywords is that it's just too hard to beat out the competition, just because the keyword you are trying to target is overused by a majority of the population. This is where other forms of SEO come into play, if you can't retain that rank you want. I'm sure you all are wondering, well if this is such an easy way of obtaining a high rank in the Search Engines, then who would people be giving these tips away? Well you see, everyone owns a different website, and this software will work differently for each person, but if you don't follow the rules, you won't reach your goal, it's that simple.

Wouldn't you love to have a program that would let you know what Search Engines want before you even get a top ranking? Wouldn't you love to know what keywords are being used the most and what you can do to improve your keywords so that you can rank higher then your competition? Well in good time you will be able to do that with this software and many people will be wondering and asking you how you did it, but they can vouch for themselves by trying the same program you are using.

Content, which is the key to success on the internet isn't easy to come by, and many people take this for granted, because they believe that posting any sort of content will bring them to success, but they are wrong. Each time you add content, Search Engines browse your website to check if the content you are using is duplicate content and if they find out that it is, they will remove your pages from their directory and you won't have anything, so it's critical to watch what you're doing.

If you decide that your content is being duplicated by another party, then the Search Engine will figure that out and penalize the first person who added the content. Meta Tags that are posted in your code is what the Search Engines see, so it's important to match the keywords that are used in your Tags in your articles also. I guarantee if you have a little patience and can add premium content to your website that you will see your stat counter grow every day. That is the gift that is given to you for all of your hard work.

Last but not least, link exchanges and link building. This form of SEO is great because this will also bring massive traffic to your website. Increasing your page rank is ever so important, because this is how Google ranks your website in their directory, and the higher your page rank is, the better your site is ranked in their directory. If you've ever noticed some sites that aren't that high in page rank, but are receiving a lot of traffic, this is because they have focused on their content and are receiving traffic that decides they are going to come back for more. Using link building solutions is hard work, but also with time will allow you to achieve the goal you have been working hard to get for a long time.

So ending with a bang is obviously what you want to do, so taking an overall look at what you are trying to do with your website using SEO methods that are so powerful, they will make your head spin. One, you want to find the best keywords for your target area. I can't stress this anymore, because there is so much competition out there that you really need to actually "compete" against them to rank higher then them.

The advantage you have using SEO software is that the program will let you know what keywords are working and what one aren't, so basically the program isn't doing as much work as you'd want it to do, but it is helping you maintain your keywords, where others might not know how theirs are doing. Definitely try it out, because you won't know until you try and you're only going to risk a few dollars, which in my opinion is a very good investment.

Maximize Your Website Visibility With SEO Software

Overview

The main trick that you have to learn is how to be found on the web. We are all invisible on the web unless we take steps to attract attention to ourselves.

The web is a whole world and finding what you want is a challenge. Unlike finding a book in the library, for example, where you could use a map to help you get around, the Web is so huge, that no directory could do it full justice. It's just as easy to get to the heart of China on the web as to connect to something down the block. This effectively puts the whole universe in front of you at any time and it's too big to be easily categorized.

The search engines were developed to allow users to find whatever they want or need by providing a phrase or data that is to be searched for. This is by far the primary way that sites are found now.

If you have a business site or a blog or any website that you would like to have noticed and visited by many people, you need to make the search engines like you so that your site comes up near the top of the search that fits your website description. For example, if you have a website about the benefits of polygamy, you want a search for polygamy to list your site as one of the first search results.

Search Engine Goals and Methods

The goal of the search engines is to provide the best answer to what people are looking for. To really do this, the search engine would have to make some sort of evaluation of the quality of the information. The search engine developers create complicated algorithms to try to achieve this.

The major tools that the search engines use for evaluating a page are keyword density and link quantity and quality.

The phrases that people provide to find something are called keywords. If a person wanted to know about computer security or cheap gasoline, they would enter either pair of these 2 words into the search engine. Computer security or cheap gasoline would be a keyword set. Articles that have the term computer security or cheap gasoline in them a number of times are likely to provide the needed information. This is especially true if the keyword is part of the title. The frequency of the keywords and its placement in the article is one indicator of the article's value.

People sometimes can cheat by filling a half a page with just this keyword repeated over and over. The search engines are on to this trick and they have logic to ignore this kind of posting.

Links or more accurately hyperlinks are parts of a page that take a user to a different part of the current web page or another web site's page entirely. Sites which have many links pointing to them are considered to be good because many people have found it worthwhile to link to them. A link from an authority site such as Microsoft in computers and Toyota in cars are considered to be especially valuable. Links from a page with a high Google rating are also valuable.

The search engines run a special program called a spider (really many instances of the same program) that crawls the web and looks at every site on the web to get keyword and link counts and also provide information for new sites.

What the user needs to do is make the keywords that apply to their page prominent and have them appear frequently enough to get noticed by the search engine spider. Additionally, the user needs to generate backlinks pointing to their site to raise their site's value.

SEO software types

The following are the main SEO software types;

1. Niche finders
2. Keyword Analyzers
3. Link generation aids
4. Traffic Analyzers

Google Forbids Use of This SEO Software! How Safe is Your SEO Tool?

This time it really happened. Google put the brakes on one of the world's most used SEO software products that was running unauthorized automated ranking reports against its servers. The threat of WebPosition no longer working on Google has been present for years. Now the threat is over and the reality is all too clear. Should we be surprised? Anyone who has read Google's acceptable usage policy saw this coming a mile away. Google has had their guidelines posted for years, which prohibit this kind of thing; even calling out WebPosition by name! You can see it here http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66357.

So is any SEO software product safe? Definitely! And do they work? Absolutely! Most SEO professionals owe their success to a great tool or software suite. As an SEO trainer I have seen brand new students breaking into Google's top ten with the right tool. And I can tell you; it's an awesome sight!

How can you tell the right tool from a wrong one? It's not always easy but keep this in mind... Any optimization product that is intentionally designed to violate Google's acceptable usage policy is likely to get the boot. But you're better off without it anyway. Or at least better off not using that one function that pounds Google's servers; automated rank reporting.

Checking your ranking is just one aspect of SEO software that most of the product suites include simply because it is expected. Most people drank the "You need to know where you are to know where you are going" Kool-Aid long ago. And it's not their fault. We've all been there. And in truth that's very true for actual optimization efforts. But it makes no sense for simply seeing where your web pages rank. Sure it's nice to see how far you've come, but does it help establish your target? No. You are still shooting for number one! The target never changes, just your focus. So keep your eyes on the prize and stay focused.

As a professional SEO trainer I see people everyday who make the same mistake of focusing more on what's behind them, than in front. Consider this; have you ever seen a horror movie where the soon to be victim keeps looking over her shoulder at the crazed killer, oblivious to the obstacles in front, and you just wanted to scream "Just keep going! Don't look back!"

My advice to you is "Just keep going! Don't look back!"

More easily said than done, right? So how can you focus more on what matters?

Select an SEO software suite that does more than a one trick pony. Many tools built their reputation by making you believe you have to know EXACTLY where you rank, for any given keyword, at any time. Why? I mean, what is your goal? Number one, right? Just enter your keyword or phrase then browse the first few pages of the search engine. If it's not in the first thirty matches nobody is likely to see it. Problem solved. Just keep going with your eye on the prize.

So what exactly should you be looking for in SEO software? There are two biggies. First, try to find a tool that offers good link building capabilities. The ability to find and retain the best link partners (reciprocal linking) is your most important task if you want to do well on Google. Linking alone is responsible for close to 87% of any given Web page's success on Google. Beyond that, try to find a tool that offers unique methods for gaining one way inbound links, such as article marketing. And definitely make sure the tool can spot Google's elusive "authority sites." This is huge! One product suite I've used that works great, and does all three, can be found at http://www.SE0elite.com ($167.)

Second, try to find an app that will dig into your site just like a search engine and tell you how to best optimize it. Just keep in mind that not all tools are created equal in this regard. I tried it with WebPosition Gold through several versions with no luck. I could consistently optimize my pages faster, and get better results, without using the software's recommendations.

But some tools are very good. One product that does a great job with analyzing your site and recommending changes that will shoot you up the ranking ladder is http://www.iBusinessPR0M0TER.com. It has won more than twenty of the most coveted top editor's pick awards and is the SEO software product of choice for some of the most successful websites in the world, like eBay.com and Network Solutions, Inc (the original domain registrar.) If nothing else, visit their site and check out their client list. It's not the cheapest but it is one of the best. And for the $250 price tag you will have the same SEO secret weapon as many leading Fortune 500 firms.

By the way, this one does a nice job of link building too. You give up a few things the other does, but it's not really worth it to buy both. Save your money for a victory celebration when you make it into the top 10.

And these are not the only games in town. There are a lot of great products out there. The trick is in finding one that adds value to you in ways that won't upset the search engines. Just remember that SEO software is meant to work WITH the search engines, NOT against them. The linking and optimization analysis features mentioned above provide the fastest, most direct routes to the top of Google, MSN, Yahoo and all other major search engines. And they do not interfere with the search engine or burn up its resources. In short, they are safe to use and can help get you to the top.

Enjoy the view from up there!

SEO Software for High Rankings

It seems that every day a new SEO software tool comes out that promises to help your site get top rankings in the search engines with the click of a button. If only it were true! The programs I’ve looked at provide some interesting insights into your website, but they seem to focus on a whole lot of stuff that has nothing to do with search engine rankings.

For example, SEO tools are great at telling you how many words you have in your Title tag, and what the ratio of keywords to text is within you website copy (aka keyword density). They even make recommendations on what these numbers actually should be based on their automated analysis.

The problem is that their recommendations are wrong.

The premise of the software is flawed from the start. While one would think that since search engines are using a formula for determining how to rank websites in the search results, it follows that it could be reverse-engineered. If that were the case, then yes, someone could invent some SEO software to do that. In fact, back in the olden days of SEO — I believe it was sometime in the mid-90s when Inktomi was being used as the backend for a few search engines — someone had developed a specific template that could be filled in with your keywords of choice and it would basically guarantee you a high ranking! However, in the 90’s search engines weren’t even close to being as sophisticated as they are today.

Today, the formulas (or algorithms) have so many aspects to them, with each factor possibly affecting other factors, that you can’t just follow any specific set of rules to gain rankings. There is no best number of words for a Title tag or for the number of words on a page. One page’s Title tag may be perfect with 5 words in it, while another works better with 12. One page may say all it needs to say in 75 words, and another in 2500. You can’t analyze the top ranking pages, copy what they’re doing and expect that it will work for you. Well, you can try, but you’ll learn very quickly that it won’t.

Let me be very clear — there are no specific SEO rules or formulas that you can follow that will consistently provide you with a high ranking in the search engines for your keywords of choice for any given page. None. Nada. Zilch.

And that includes Google’s webmaster guideline “rules” and all the stuff you read in SEO articles, as well as the information provided at conferences. Much of it is outdated myths, or just plain wrong. You will never find that quick-fix, automated, magic-bullet list of specific things that will work for every site/page every time. The only way to truly optimize your website is by testing a variety of things and see what works for you. While you can use software to provide some clues, nothing beats the experience of an SEO expert who has seen different techniques come and go through the years. That experience with hundreds of different sites that enables them to fit the perfect SEO strategy to your particular website. Unfortunately, you can’t package up that experience in an automated tool, regardless of what the toolmakers may try to tell you.

While the low cost of SEO software is enticing, and certainly a much cheaper alternative to hiring an SEO company, in the end, you will get what you pay for. The software may help you find some specific technical glitches that should be fixed, and it may help you with your keyword research; but since SEO is largely a creative endeavor, that’s where the value of the software ends. Most of SEO is done through creative means and for that you need the brainpower of an SEO expert.

Every site is different. And every page on every site is different. They all have different goals and target audiences. Since a big part of SEO is in the writing that’s on the page—making it enticing to both search engines and your target market can only be done by hand. Try to write copy based on some arbitrary numbers that some SEO tool tells you to use and you’ll see what I mean. You will basically end up with a big mess of unreadable nonsense every time.

The worst thing about SEO software is that it causes you to waste your time and energy on SEO tasks that in the end will have no bearing on gaining targeted traffic to your website. Some of these wasted endeavors include removing tables from your HTML code, adding meta keyword tags, validating HTML, moving keywords to the top of the page, adding keywords to your URLs, adding H1 tags. None of which will change your search engine rankings. That’s right—none of them.

Don’t believe me? Go get yourself some SEO software and try it for yourself then let me know how it turns out!

The Need of SEO Software

Traffic is an incredible commodity. It is priceless! If you get the quality traffic you will be in the business. This principle suits every sort of business, both online and offline. In online business, this plays a vital role. The key in achieving success is directly proportional to the traffic you get.

Unfortunately, generating traffic from the big search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN is probably one of the biggest frustrations most net marketers face. It is something like a dog trying to chase his own tail, you go round and round and round but eventually end up in the same place you began!

Google, Yahoo, MSN and Ask.com have one thing in common. They have an algorithm to rank the pages/websites. In fact, no search engine discloses their algorithm. So the SEO professionals continuously evaluate the web pages and their ranking in the search engines. When compared to the sponsored listings the users like to access the genuine information providing sites. This is nothing but organic search engine traffic. This traffic is very useful to the business. As the traffic from organic search engine is the right one for the business, each and every online business marketer is more interested in getting organic search engine traffic when compared to the sponsored traffic.

While many businesses choose to use the service of a professional SEO company, others decide to take the plunge and manage their online promotion needs in-house with SEO tools. For hiring a professional SEO company, the budget is the main limitation. One needs to effort a minimum of 500 USD per month. And the whole process of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) will take a minimum 6 months to get results. Moreover the budget varies in accordance to the competition of the keywords selected. In other words, a strong backup in terms of finance is needed for SEO which cannot be afforded by a new online marketer.

The other method of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is by using the seo tools. So for analyzing each and every parameter we need to have different seo tools like keyword suggestion tool, Meta tag generator, Backlink Analyzer, keyword ranking checker etc. This could be a cumbersome process. Moreover, these tools vary in performance correlation.

So there is a need of a good SEO Software suite that could provide the tools for every stage of the SEO process ranging from Keyword Research to tracking the rank of the keyword in the search engine. If you are trying to do SEO in todays fast moving world, and not taking advantage of the SEO Software suite, its your huge mistake.

Using a good SEO software program helps to make Search Engine Optimization (SEO) a simple affair and reap the benefits of online business. Good SEO software does all the functions listed below:

The IP Address of the website linking to you or a competitor
Analyzes backlinks in Google, Yahoo, AlltheWeb, MSN, Altavista.
The page your link is located on
Calculates the number of PR0-10 websites linking to your website
The Alexa Rank of your link partners website
The page title of the webpage and the anchor text of your link
The total number of links on the webpage your link resides on.
The email address and the other contact details of the website your link resides on
The link popularity of the webpage your link resides on
Summarizes the number of links from each IP Address
Even the age of all websites
Whether the website is in the Yahoo Directory and DMOZ.org,
Keyword Density and Keyword Prominence
Notifies and keeps a daily, weekly, and monthly change record of where your website is ranked for ANY search term
Free lifetime software upgrades tracking the changes in the world of SEO
And much more!

So for effective search engine optimization, there is a need of good seo software. This could be helpful to both newbies and also to the experienced guys. With good quality software, you can promote your products to the right people more efficiently. So a good SEO software targets at the quality traffic, and sites being placed in the top rank gives you the ultimate BUSINESS.

SEO Software Showdown

Using the right SEO software is one of the most important things you can do for your website's success but finding it is not always easy. The products you hear the most about are often just the most advertised and not necessarily the best, or at least not the best to fit your particular needs.

For the most part, just about any product can help you in some way unless it's a real piece of junk. So if you already have one and are not getting the results you want, try to spend a little more time with it and make it pay off. But if you are looking, read on. This article covers 3 that have helped thousands get the ranking they need. Even if one is not right for you, you can see what the top rated tools do.

But before we dive into the tools, let's look at why we need them. In short; using SEO software is like buying time and expertise. A good product will save you a great deal of time and deliver the results of a search engine optimization expert. If you have a lot of free time to learn and perform manual SEO, you can save a hundred or so bucks and do it all without a tool. If you'd like to see faster results and focus your time in other areas, it's probably worth the money to buy a good product. Of course with so many claiming to be the best, the hardest part is finding the one that will work for you.

Over the past nine years, as an SEO consultant, I've used over a dozen well known, and not so well known SEO tools. The results have varied from "Wow!" to "What a waste!" We'll focus on the "Wows!" three types, one of which is likely to do what you need; 1.) Jumpstart (for maximum return with minimum cost), 2.) Site Owner's Best Friend (to tackle major SEO tasks and more), and 3.) SEO Pro Pick (what SEO professionals use to get the best possible results in the least possible time.)

So here they are, arranged by cost starting with the least expensive...

1.) SEO Equalizer ($77)

Those new to SEO, looking for a jumpstart with SEO software have found a winner with SEO Equalizer (http://www.EqualizeSEO.com). It became popular as an SEO spy tool and soon caught on as a great link building program and keyword analyzer. It provides an easy 'in' for anyone wanting to take control of their Web placement destiny. It's great for anyone who wants to minimize spending, boost ranking and does not mind waiting a little longer to see great results (as compared to the Pro Pick, SEO Elite below.)

Here's what it does best:

  1. Finds your most competitive keywords and phrases
  2. Locates and analyses competitor sites
  3. Builds and helps maintain link partnerships

Quick to learn and easy to use, SEO Equalizer is also one of the best bargains at $77 for a full license.

2.) Traffic Travis ($99)

This is a one of those hidden gems you dream about finding. A great app that not a lot of people know about (probably because the name is not very descriptive.) With a price tag of about $100, Traffic Travis (http://www.TrafficTravisSEO.com) is powerful enough for professionals and easy to use for a website owner, new to search engine optimization, who just wants results with very little learning curve.

Traffic Travis is like the "Swiss Army Knife" of SEO software and has become known as the "Site Owner's Best Friend." Here's some of what it does...

  1. Finds, sorts and organizes your most important keywords
  2. Shows your site's (and competitors') rankings on major search engines
  3. Completes full SEO page analysis for any Website, so you can see what the top ranked pages are doing right fro 'on page optimization' and how you can do even better.
  4. Helps build and manage backlinks (very important for Google.)
  5. Manages your Google AdWords campaign if you do PPC.
  6. And even builds online survey pages to quickly collect visitor feedback once they find your site.

It's tough to do an "apples to apples" comparison of this one with either of the others. It wears a lot of hats that Website owners can benefit from. Like SEO Equalizer it has shown me slightly slower results than SEO Elite, but is a great value.

3.) SEO Elite

My first "Wow!" happened in 2005 with SEO Elite (http://www.SEOeliteWeb.com). This app was the first truly affordable piece of SEO software I came across that did all it promised. At $167 it's about half the price of similar products but packs a lot more punch. It has three things that impress me almost as much as the results it gets...

  1. No annual fees (unlike some that charge $100 a year in "subscription" fees.)
  2. Free lifetime upgrades (I'm already on my 3rd version and it keeps getting better!)
  3. No Questions Asked, 8 Week Guarantee or full refund

That's why I bought it. This is why I kept it...

Google results after the first four weeks:

# 1 Spots = 7

# 2 Spots = 11

# 3 Spots = 16

Links = 409 high quality inbound links obtained (extremely important to rank well on Google)

That was all in the first month and for just one site. In the three years since then I have received hundreds of additional top rankings spanning multiple sites.

Here are some of the things SEO Elite does very well...

  1. Let's you check your site's ranking for unlimited keywords on the major search engines
  2. Tracks any changes in rank and notifies you
  3. Finds the best possible link partners for your site, based on Google's standards
  4. Shows which partners are still linking back to you
  5. Performs backlink searches on all major search engines
  6. Analyzes and compares special search commands on Google
  7. Finds exactly which websites your competitors are advertising on
  8. Helps you eliminate any penalized websites you link to

If you need great SEO software, can invest $167 and don't mind spending a few hours mastering a new tool, SEO Elite is worth looking at. It's the most widely used professional SEO software package for a reason.

Getting the right SEO software can be the best buying decision you ever make for your website. Enjoy!

Tips for Getting the Best SEO Softwares

Marketing is incomplete without internet. And marketing in internet is incomplete without proper SEO software. Sounds like a great man’s saying right? But one thing is for sure that SEO software is a happening thing in the world of search engines. But finding the right software for your site is the biggest challenge, more so because of the frequently changing algorithm of the search engines. So, how to choose one?

What is happening behind the scenes of the internet, that’s the first basic task of good SEO software? Good SEO software can help you take your business forward. You can keep an eye on your competition and spy where your competitors are heading, find out what keywords are they competing for, and many more things, to gain a better competitive edge.

Roughly speaking, SEO software falls into two categories – On-page SEO software and Off-page SEO software. On-page SEO software, in a way, polishes your site- make suggestions to keep you focused on relevant keywords and guides you through your site. To be honest, if you have the basic understanding of SEO, you don’t need an On-page SEO software. On the other hand, Off-page SEO software would help you building links. So this is what you expect from a SEO software – traffic, or rather positive traffic.

There are two elemental questions that you should ask before you waste your dollars on the wrong SEO software.

  1. The software costs how much? Often what happens if you pay less you don’t end up with a great product and at the same time if you pay more, you end up with disappointment. So it should not cost you the heaven and at the same time must not be as cheap as hell.
  2. The software is designed by whom? This is an important issue. Only those can help you who know the business. You should from those who can provide you the proof of their earnings.

Those were the top questions. But there are some more factors which are worth considering before you go for SEO software.

  1. Familiarize yourself with the complete feature of the software. Don’t just throw your dollars without knowing what you are going to get.
  2. Know both the shortcomings and advantages of the software.
  3. Look for customer review and customer support services.

Now with all these “points to remember” you may think why not hire a SEO company than taking all the trouble? But I would say that buying a SEO software is more beneficial. First, it is a one-time cost. You don’t have to pay a SEO firm again and again. Second, SEO software always comes with a variety of tools and features which are extremely useful and helpful. Some of the features are very easy to use and for which the SEO firms may charge you very highly. Third, you will be holding the thread of the wind chime. I mean you will take the charge of all the resources to optimize your site. The average Joe will not have the resources or time to research and keep up to date constantly on new developments in the vast SEO area. But most of the SEO software comes with regular updates.

General functions of all SEO software are relatively the same. But some SEO software addresses certain services as per your need. So, quality SEO software is essential to succeed online. To know what is best for you and your site just read on SEO and start cracking.

Awareness of Best SEO Softwares

At this moment you are into this article because you were looking for something about SEO Softwares or about the best SEO Software around for you. But the sad thing is that there are still hundreds around who doesn’t even know about SEO softwares, leave the best SEO software for them. And the other part of the story is that even if some of them are aware of the best SEO software, they are not using it. Now the question is why? There is a possibility of two particular reasons for that –

  1. No proper introduction to the SEO software.
  2. Lack of knowledge about the benefits of the best SEO software.

So this article is basically to enlighten you about these two aspects of the best SEO software for you.

To introduce the best SEO software, its first task is to keep you aware of what is happening behind the scenes of internet. The hours and dollars that you spent on building your website will be a mere waste if you don’t get the desired traffic. And this is where the best SEO software can help you. The best SEO software can help you lead your business forward and can provide you a better competitive edge against your competitors. You can spy your competitors, find out what keywords are they competing for, and many more things, that will bear a positive impact upon your business.

That was a very generic introduction to SEO software. But there are a few things that one needs to keep in mind before going for even the best SEO software. How much the SEO software costs and who designed the software? It must not cost you the heaven. However don’t be mistaken that if your best SEO software is less expensive they are not supposed to be the serious towards their features. However cheap it may be but if it is not bringing you traffic then you are wasting your money, and that is the bottom line for the best SEO software.

But there are certain points to remember before you buy SEO softwares which you think is the best SEO software for your business.

  1. Know the complete features of the software.
  2. Familiarize yourself with both the advantages and disadvantages of the software.
  3. Customer review and customer services are a must.
Best SEO softwares are optimization tools themselves. They help you check your results with the tracking devise that they come equipped with. This checks the repetition of the same mistakes that tend to occur repeatedly. Best SEO software will always allow you to track and alter the aspects of your search engine optimization. Make sure that you know how the SEO software works or else even the best SEO software is of no use for your business. If you are not familiar with the software, opt for a easy to use software.

Talking about money that you spend on a SEO software, it is not only the dollars that you spend in buying it that matters, but also the investment returns that you are going to get in the long run which is worth considering. Best SEO software always tries to streamline the process to achieve a website which is well rated. It gives you the tools that are necessary for your website and in return you get the needed traffic. This indeed contributes in a positive way to get back your investment returns.

Finding the right software for your site is the biggest challenge, more so because of the frequently changing algorithm of the search engines. But keeping in mind the above factors may help you to some extent in choosing the best SEO software which is essential to succeed online.

SEO Software And Ebooks

I have been on the Internet for a long time. At least I have been doing marketing a long time in relation to the Internet as a commercial entity.

Around the end of 1995 I speculated in domain names, learning about keywords and phrases and how they help the search engines find the content you are providing at your website.

I continued to learn about keywords and as search engine optimization became a necessity I was ready to use what I had learned about keywords and phrases, domain names, search engines and content.

There were quite a few people, say a couple of hundred who really knew how to use keywords to optimize websites.

However, then it was to help search engines do a better job of indexing all of the content on the web. Now it seems the roles are reversed and the search engines are in charge. At least many seem to think so.

Now there are also a lot of people, thousands, who claim to know all of the search engine secrets and some claim they can get you top listings if you just sign up with them, buy their Ebooks, buy their videos, or buy their software.

I always have a hard time with the math. If these guys can guarantee you a top 10 listing for your keywords, then 11 companies sign up for their service that are also targeting your keywords or phrases, then how do they get all 11 customers a top 10 listing?

There are a lot of things we have known about the importance of for years such as anchor text, titles for links, surrounding links with keywords in the body text to make the links more relative, alt tags, metatags, keyword count, and more.

But now almost every day I see a website or article promoting a “new search engine secret” and it has a name I have never heard of. Then when I investigate and read up on it I find that they have renamed anchor text something else, keyword-count something else, etc.

Just like Hollywood these days seem to only be remaking movies we have already seen and giving them new names, it seems there are a lot of people out there now renaming SEO methods that are as old as the Internet with new names and selling them as new secrets.

They sell you these “new secrets” on video, in an Ebook, in a Seminar, or produce software that “optimizes” your website for you.

Most of the SEO Gurus of today never actually optimized a website for themselves or anyone else with any good results. They simply advertised to other people that they know how to make them rich in 90 days with little or no work at all and can promise you top 10 search engine rank in all the major search engines.

There are some of us who actually do the work and will keep on doing so and remaining ethical about the business. Its just hard to sit by and see so many people bilked out of their money with promises that no one can keep.

I have clients send me stuff all the time.

“Hey look at this new SEO technique I got in my email!”

"Look at this website I found that can get us top listings in 30 days!”

I go and read up on it for my client and find the same old stuff repackaged once again. Things I am already doing for the client is now a video or an Ebook and they cannot understand why I would recommend not spending money on it.

If you are going into business on the web and you read this article, just learn one thing from it.

There are NO shortcuts to success. Get rich quick schemes are just schemes. There is no magic formula or secret to getting top listings in the major search engines.

If there is a secret, it is that it actually requires hard work to be successful on the web just like it takes hard work to become successful with any business on or offline.

Buying an Ebook or a video or some software is not going to make you rich or get you top listings in the search engines. Anyone who tells you that work is not required to make money on the web is lying to you.

Learn how to do this for yourself or hire a professional who does not promise you the sky, but also hire one that can prove the results they have gotten for clients and for their own websites.

Testimonials are worth absolutely nothing.

“Chris McElroy is amazing! He got me a top 10 listing for my website in less than thirty days! The videos are easy to follow and in just days I was an SEO expert. I recommend everyone buy his Ebooks too!” –-John Doe, New York—

Now don’t you just want to run right out and buy my video? Too bad I don’t have one to sell.

Nope, no Ebooks either.

No Software to make you rich.

But I can do the search engine optimization and promotion for your website and prove the results with weekly increases in link popularity and search engine indexing.

SEO - Software Cannot Do The Seo For You

A discussion of software that is used to enhance SEO and why software will not work if you do not have certain writing strategies in place before you deploy it on your website.

Buying article or blog generating software or programs that automatically generate pages and articles might make you feel more efficient but that does not mean you are doing well in terms of SEO. It doesn't matter how slick and professional marketing software makes your site look. The only way you are going to generate profits is to learn how to use words that clearly communicate the benefits of your offer backed up with the facts about why they should buy from you and not anyone else.

No matter how much marketing software changes, the secrets of successful persuasive copywriting will always remain the same. Knowing how to write persuasively it is revealed that the most crucial and essential marketing tool you will ever have. Your motivation to write should be your faith in your own product.

Part of good search engine optimization copy is convincing your customer to buy through the manipulation of their emotions - especially when it comes to raising enthusiasm for the product. If you can write effective ads and sales letters that motivate the emotions to buy then you will have learned how to master one of the oldest and most profitable secrets known to advertising.

Key things to keep in mind when writing natural SEO that will do better for your business then any software program is to remember to
  1. write like people talk,
  2. create intimacy and connection with a reader
  3. keep your reader’s attention,
  4. state the same offer in several different ways
  5. back up your arguments with facts and research and
  6. lay out your copy on your website so it is reader friendly.

Using well-written copy in conjunction with efficient software may very well be the best search engine optimization strategy that you can use to increase your web presence.

SEO Software And You

The thought of fully optimizing your website through SEO principles may seem an impossible task, especially so for the beginning netrepreneur, but it can be achieved. While it's possible to learn the skills needed to construct a fully optimized site there may be SEO software that may assist you in reaching your objective more quickly. The use of a quality SEO software application can also provide a means of sidestepping some of the pitfalls many online businesses discover when attempting to fully implement optimization techniques.

Some software titles for SEO include Dynamic Keyword, WebPosition Gold and WebCEO. In each case the design is to perform specialized functions to enhance the overall level of optimization of your website. It should be noted that while WebPosition Gold has the longest track record it has also been listed as software to avoid by Google.

For the purposes of this article we will look at some of the functions of WebCEO simply because they do offer a free version of their software that is helpful in optimization while giving you a feel for other features available on paid versions of the product.

WebCEO provides more than ten SEO tools to enhance areas of your site including search engine submitter, keyword research, search engine ranking checker, link popularity checker and traffic analysis.

The purpose of this article is not to promote one software application over another, but is simply a means of providing you with information that may assist you in defining a software solution that will help you manage the task of optimizing your site.

If you are a small business, it is possible to use a free trial of any of SEO software products available. Most provide either a 10 or 30 day free trial while WebCEO provides a limited edition of their product that is free to use as long as you want. This product is not as comprehensive as their paid versions, but it may provide ongoing assistance if you have a limited budget. Most SEO software provides either a 10 or 30 day free trial while WebCEO provides a limited edition of their product that is free to use as long as you want. This product is not as comprehensive as their paid versions, but it may provide ongoing assistance if you have a limited budget.

Even businesses that have a good handle on SEO issues find the use of SEO software a means of providing a comprehensive overview of how your SEO strategies are working and if you might need to refine keyword targets.

General functions of all SEO software are relatively the same. However, there are specialized services that some software application can provide that others do not address. Read through available reviews and try a free offer to get a sense for what SEO software can do to help you with your online marketing performance.

The internet has become integral part of our lives and most people use it on a daily basis to conduct shopping, banking, visit personal websites, play games, chat etc. Many of these activities require you to enter secret passwords or information which you probably don't want anyone to know or see.

This done via your IP address and all your records and data are stored and held by your Internet Service Providers (ISP's), these can be easily bought and obtained by a third party if they wanted. Now you are probably wondering is there a way to Surf the Web completely anonymously and have all your identity hidden. Yes there is, and there are both Free Anonymous Web Surfing options and Anonymous surfing Software Available at your disposal to choose from.

So which is the best Way To Go, should you use Free Web Based Anonymizers or grab a hold of some good Software? Let's take a quick look at both options and see which one is more effective in completely hiding your identity and keeping your web surfing experience completely anonymous.

Free Anonymous web surfing can be conducted using surfing tools commonly known as web anonymizers or web based proxies. They are usually completely free to use and the process is fairly simple, you go to the proxy website and type in the address of the website you wish to visit. The proxy website will then redirect you to the destination site, which will see the proxy servers IP address instead of yours. Now this may seem like an ideal solution however in reality these proxy websites are not as helpful as they seem. Just searching for a legit proxy website can be a frustrating and unpleasant experience on its own. If you are lucky enough to avoid the phony proxy sites that have been deliberately set up to trap the "devious anonymous surfer" by some extra savvy Identity thieves, then you may run into a server which has been specifically set up to track your surfing habits in order to email you a bunch of targeted SPAM.

Those who do manage to find a clean and legitimate free proxy website eventually give up using it because it is too slow or incredibly unreliable. You see web based anonymizers are a convenient option if you are an occasional web surfer, however if you continually use the internet on a regular basis then going back and forth by always having to use a proxy website can become quite annoying and tedious. Another Problem with web based proxy servers is that most of them are not enabled to function with SSL or SSH encryption. That means you cannot connect to most secure connections, such as conducting internet banking or doing shopping over the Web.

If you really want to surf the internet with complete anonymity then you need fast secure anonymous surfing software. These commercial programs are systems that you install on your system and they are constantly working to keep your identity completely hidden. They have the ability to switch proxies seamlessly with no effort, and all of your web traffic is encrypted from the client and back again. This is the only proper way to remain completely anonymous online and your ISP logs will be completely secure and unreadable by any third party.

The best anonymous surfing software's out there will not only be able to function with SSL or SSH encrypted sites in order to ensure the safest web surfing experience, but they will also protect you from other web based applications such as IM messengers or emails.

So if you are deciding whether you should engage in Free Anonymous Web Surfing or invest in some good Anonymous Surfing Software then first of all you need to figure out how much internet privacy and security really mean to you. If you are an occasional user who only uses the internet to surf some recreational websites then a free service may be efficient. However if you conduct regular electronic activities over the web such as internet banking, paying bills, buying products etc. then you may want to seriously consider investing in a good Anonymous Surfing Software. The good news is that they are fairly inexpensive and most programs offer a free trial download so you can test drive the software at no cost.

Concerned about the Privacy and safety of your computer, looking to Surf the Web Completely Anonymously? Well with the Right Anonymous Surfing Tools you can do so quite easily these days. Find out How to Hide Your IP Address for Free and surf the web with your identity fully hidden.

XsitePro2 Web Design Software

If you're marketing online, you'll no doubt need at least one site, if not now, at least in the near future. Most marketers actually have the need for multiple sites eventually. Also, unless you already know HTML, CSS, PHP and even some of the other programming languages, you'll find that having to learn it all is a lot to take on to your already busy marketing schedule.

I've found that instead of having to learn to build Websites manually (coding), there's a much better way. A good WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Web design software program is one of the best investments the online business person can make. Instead of having to spend countless hours learning to program, or spending a great deal of money every time that you need a site built, or updated, a good point and click WYSIWYG program is worth it's price many times over.

One of the most popular offerings is Adobe's Dreamweaver, and is the choice of many professional Webmasters. However, it is a relatively expensive piece of software, and does have a steep learning curve. It is a very capable package that has been around for many years, and being manufactured by Adobe has also added to it's great popularity.

However, if you're wanting something that is probably a little more geared for the affiliate marketer or anyone needing to create full-featured, easily built Websites, there's another fantastic software package called XsitePro, now in version 2. It's a very robust program that includes practically any option that the user could want or need. Whether you're an Internet Marketer needing sales pages or full content niche sites, a hobby user, someone needing a personal Website, or a professional needing to build a full blown corporate site, this software can do the job at hand. XsitePro2 is very reasonably priced, but yet has everything you could possibly want.

Some of the features include...automated Amazon and AdSense ads, easy audio and video insertion, top-notch SEO analysis, a project management function that allows the user to have multiple projects with each having multiple Websites, and hundreds of available templates allowing the user to change the look and feel of a site in just seconds. These are just a small sample of the many wonderful capabilities of XsitePro2.

For the price, features, ease of use and versatility, XsitePro2 is at the top of the heap when it comes to WYSIWYG Web Design Software programs.

Why pay more for the often over-hyped software. XSitePro2 is the most full-featured, easy to use Web design software package presently on the market. It's price/performance ratio makes it a true bargain.
You should definitely consider XSitePro2 if you're in the market for a WYSIWYG HTML site generation software tool.

What You Need to Know About Popular Software - Website Design Software

Website design software addresses an incredibly huge potential marketplace; tens and tens of millions of people create their own sites and blogs, interactive two-way web sites. Successful site building can be fun and profitable. Let's take a look at some software that can help you concretize your dreams on the web. Web design software tools fall into two basic categories WYSIWYG and HTML editing.

WYSIWYG stands for "What You See Is What You Get." With this software you more or less see as you develop it how your web page will look live. In many instances you can drag and drop layout elements into position. Because it is simple and visual, WYSIWYG is popular with novice designers.

WYSIWYG's "more or less" just isn't precise enough for advanced websites. Many site designers need a more precise tool. This is where HTML and more sophisticated web languages such as XML come in. The most widely used web scripting language, PHP, lets you mix HTML, PHP and other programming code. While it is said to be easy to learn, you have to be a programmer to apply it for any but the simplest web pages.

Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offer free WYSIWYG website design tools for personal websites. Many blogging sites offer similar tools. The occasional ISP provides templates for quickly setting up basic business websites. But if you need e-commerce, multimedia, or other functionality you will probably have to look elsewhere or learn how to roll your own.

We may divide website authoring tools into four major categories. The first group is for professional designers that need database connectivity and e-commerce functionality, such as a virtual storefront. This professional-level software tends to be expensive and hard to learn. Two of the major players are Adobe Dreamweaver 8 and NetObjects Fusion 9.0. In the hands of experts they produce sophisticated websites. These websites have their own domain name. So don't budget only for the software, you'll also have to pay for your domain name and for the web hosting.

The second group is pitched to casual enthusiasts, non-profit organizations, and small businesses. Such software is relatively inexpensive and more user-friendly. But it won't build as complex websites with interactive features such as storefronts. Like the previous category, this one develops web sites with individual domain names.

The third group of online site-builders consist of simple website and blog creation tools. You usually pay a set-up fee and monthly fees that may include web hosting. Take a look at some of these solutions such as AtomicShops.com, Homestead.com, and Blogger.com and see if they meet your needs. The fourth group of web design programs are 100% free. Two interesting programs are NVU 1.0 for website design and WordPress 2.0 for blogs. They may compete well against programs from the third group. But don't expect them to do what Dreamweaver can do in the hands of a professional. Usually these solutions don't involve paying for your own domain. Once again, to some extent you get what you pay for.

Electronic Medical Billing Software, HIPAA Compliance, and Role Based Access Control

HIPAA compliance requires special focus and effort as failure to comply carries significant risk of damage and penalties. A practice with multiple separate systems for patient scheduling, electronic medical records, and billing, requires multiple separate HIPAA management efforts. This article presents an integrated approach to HIPAA compliance and outlines key HIPAA terminology, principles, and requirements to help the practice owner to ensure HIPAA compliance by medical billing service and software vendors.

The last decade of the previous century witnessed accelerating proliferation of digital technology in health care, which, along with reduced costs and greater service quality, introduced new and greater risks for accidental disclosure of personal health information.

The Health insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was passed in 1996 by Congress to establish national standards for privacy and security of personal health data. The Privacy Rule, written by the US Department of Health and Human Services took effect on April 14, 2003.

Failure to comply with HIPAA risks accreditation and reputation damage, lawsuits by federal government, financial penalties, ranging from $100 to $250,000, and imprisonment, ranging from one year to ten years.

Protected Health Information (PHI)

The key term of HIPAA is Protected Health Information (PHI), which includes anything that can be used to identify an individual and any information shared with other health care providers or clearinghouses in any media (digital, verbal, recorded voice, faxed, printed, or written). Information that can be used to identify an individual includes:

  1. Name
  2. Dates (except year)
  3. Zip code of more than 3 digits, telephone and fax numbers, email
  4. Social security numbers
  5. Medical record numbers
  6. Health plan numbers
  7. License numbers
  8. Photographs

Information shared with other healthcare providers or clearinghouses

  1. Nursing and physician notes
  2. Billing and other treatment records

Principles of HIPAA

HIPAA intends to allow smooth flow of PHI for healthcare operations subject to patient's consent but prohibit any flow of unauthorized PHI for any other purposes. Healthcare operations include treatment, payment, care quality assessment, competence review training, accreditation, insurance rating, auditing, and legal procedures.

HIPAA promotes fair information practices and requires those with access to PHI to safeguard it. Fair information practices means that a subject must be allowed

  1. Access to PHI,
  2. Correction for errors and completeness, and
  3. Knowledge of others who use PHI

Safeguarding of PHI means that the persons that hold PHI must

  1. Be accountable for own use and disclosure
  2. Have a legal recourse to combat violations

HIPAA Implementation Process

HIPAA implementation begins upon making assumptions about PHI disclosure threat model. The implementation includes both pre-emptive and retroactive controls and involves process, technology, and personnel aspects.

A threat model helps understanding the purpose of HIPAA implementation process. It includes assumptions about

  1. Threat nature (Accidental disclosure by insiders? Access for profit? ),
  2. Source of threat (outsider or insider?),
  3. Means of potential threat (break in, physical intrusion, computer hack, virus?),
  4. Specific kind of data at risk (patient identification, financials, medical?), and
  5. Scale (how many patient records threatened?).

HIPAA process must include clearly stated policy, educational materials and events, clear enforcement means, a schedule for testing of HIPAA compliance, and means for continued transparency about HIPAA compliance. Stated policy typically includes a statement of least privilege data access to complete the job, definition of PHI and incident monitoring and reporting procedures. Educational materials may include case studies, control questions, and a schedule of review seminars for personnel.

Technology Requirements for HIPAA Compliance

Technology implementation of HIPAA proceeds in stages from logical data definition to physical data center to network.

  1. To assure physical data center security, the manager must
    1. Lock data center
    2. Manage access list
    3. Track data center access with closed circuit TV cameras to monitor both internal and external building activities
    4. Protect access to data center with 24 x 7 onsite security
    5. Protect backup data
    6. Test recovery procedure
  2. For network security, the data center must have special facilities for
    1. Secure networking - firewall protection, encrypted data transfer only
    2. Network access monitoring and report auditing
  3. For data security, the manager must have
    1. Individual authentication - individual logins and passwords
    2. Role Based Access Control (see below)
    3. Audit trails - all access to all data fields tracked and recorded
    4. Data discipline - Limited ability to download data

Role Based Access Control (RBAC)

RBAC improves convenience and flexibility of systems management. Greater convenience helps reducing the errors of commission and omission in granting access privileges to users. Greater flexibility helps implement the policy of least privilege, where the users are granted only as much privileges as required for completing their job.

RBAC promotes economies of scale, because the frequency of changes of role definition for a single user is higher than the frequency of changes of role definitions across entire organization. Thus, to make a massive change of privileges for a large number of users with same set of privileges, the administrator only makes changes to the role definition.

Hierarchical RBAC further promotes economies of scale and reduces the likelihood of errors. It allows redefining roles by inheriting privileges assigned to roles in the higher hierarchical level.

RBAC is based on establishing a set of user profiles or roles according to responsibilities. Each role has a predefined set of privileges. The user acquires privileges by receiving membership in the role or assignment of a profile by the administrator.

Every time when the definition of the role changes along with the set of privileges that is required to complete the job associated with the role, the administrator needs only to redefine the privileges of the role. The privileges of all of the users that have this role get redefined automatically.

Similarly, if the role of a single user is changed, the only operation that needs to be performed is the reassignment of the user profile, which will redefine user's access privileges automatically according to the new profile.

Summary

HIPAA compliance requires special practice management attention. A practice with multiple separate systems for scheduling, electronic medical records, and billing, requires multiple separate HIPAA management efforts. An integrated system reduces the complexity of HIPAA implementation. By outsourcing technology to a HIPAA-compliant vendor of vericle-like technology solution on an ASP or SaaS basis, HIPAA management overhead can be eliminated (see companion papers on ASP and SaaS for medical billing).
